How to Hear God

Would you recognize your mom or dad’s voice without caller ID? Of course, you would—when you're close to someone, their voice is unmistakable. It’s the same with God. Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” The closer we are to Him, the clearer His voice becomes. So, how do we get closer?

Here are three simple steps:

1. Close the Gap
Closeness takes consistency. Skipping church, prayer, or time in the Word creates distance. James 4:8 says, “Come near to God, and He will come near to you.” Be honest with Him—confess, open up, and lean in. When you do, you’ll find He’s been close all along.

2. Choose the Right Voices
You are who you surround yourself with. Proverbs 12:26 reminds us, “The righteous choose their friends carefully.” Get around people who inspire your faith—small groups, Bible studies, or friends who walk closely with Jesus. Their encouragement keeps you grounded and growing.

3. See God in the Everyday
Don’t wait for fireworks—faith grows in the ordinary. John 20:29 says, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Look for Him in quiet moments of prayer, a verse that speaks to you, or a friend’s encouragement. The small, consistent moments are where His presence becomes undeniable. Lean in, tune in, and you’ll hear His voice loud and clear.
